Facebook Let's Hokies Personalize Ads You See On Your Page!

Did you know you can influence what contextual ads appear on your facebook pages while you browse?

As I fellow netrepreneur, and marketing consultant - I nearly wanted to cry for joy - that I mattered, and you listen.
 

* Note:  The hokie bird watermark is not part of facebook's wonderful voting platform, it is merely part of the screen capture preference settings from one of my favorite programs in the computer PC world.  If you are wondering, it is called Snagit.  

To facebook marketing people:   I may have thrown off your complicated algorithm on this one, but I hope to start a facebook movement to stop such UVA behavior on our beloved facebook pages. It just can't be tolerated any longer.  Ha!   BTW, no UVA ads were harmed or clicked in building this screen image.  I respect people's income, even if they are promoting such trash on my page; and I would never cost some cavailer additional ad fees for fear I would be wasting their third generation family trust fund that is needed to buy some real football players for their wha whos?

So my friends, I hope you have enjoyed this little social lesson 101.  If you have, feel free to pass along to your friends, so they too will STOP THE ADVERTISING MADNESS, one vote at a time.

If you know me, and my business past - I usually give more than I receive.  Now I'm flipping the tables with a little social experiment of my own; wondering if enough people have been touched by my work, advice, and ideas - could I raise enough to get an iphone for myself.   So I set up the site that probably brought you here in the first place www.helpchrisgetaniphone.com and decided to see.   I will only post the site link in a few places to see how it turns out.  Facebook, Twitter, and my email signature.  Let the social God's do as they wish with my success.  If I fail in raising $299 in donations, I'll donate 100% of the money to charity http://www.stbaldricks.org of which I've been involved with for over 6 years now.   So the challenge is $299 or more.  Any less, and the charity wins.  Any more, and the extra will go to the charity as well.   I will also post a video review of my transition on the site (or this blog) for all to see in hopes that others will learn something from it.  I'm also working on a few 'gifts' to those who end up donating as well from some corporate sponsors - so stay tuned.  Suprises are always fun to get folks - and you never know what the worth may be to your business, or personal enjoyment.

SEATTLE - Here's the scenario: It's Friday night, and what began as an innocent happy-hour margarita morphed into a few pitchers. After all, those tacos were salty.

Bidding friends adieu, you jump in a cab, head home and decide a quick e-mail check is in order. And there it is: a message from your ex. Or your boss. Or that friend you're secretly mad at.

If you're the kind of person who types tipsy and regrets it in the morning, Google's "Mail Goggles," a new test-phase feature in the free Gmail service, might save you some angst.

The Goggles can kick in late at night on weekends. The feature requires you to solve a few easy math problems in short order before hitting "send." If your logical thinking skills are intact, Google is betting you're sober enough to work out the repercussions of sending that screed you just drafted.

And if you can't multiply two times five, you'll probably thank Google in the morning.

To activate Goggles, Gmail users should click the "Settings" link at the top of a Gmail page, then go to the "Labs" section.

There's no shame in admitting that sometimes you need a little extra help. Gmail engineer Jon Perlow designed Goggles with his own weaknesses in mind.

"Sometimes I send messages I shouldn't send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night e-mail to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together," he wrote when announcing Mail Goggles on a company blog.

The name is derived from the slang term "beer goggles," or the curious effect of alcohol on one's ability to see the true nature of that "cutie" at the other end of the bar.

But you can set up Mail Goggles to protect you from yourself at other emotionally vulnerable times — before your morning coffee, for example, or right after "Grey's Anatomy."

The Jar of Life

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember this...

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.  When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.  He then asked the students if the jar was full.  They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar He shook the jar lightly.  The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.  He then asked the students again if the jar was full.  They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.  He asked once more if the jar was full.  The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.  The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.  The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else---the small stuff.  'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room f or the pebbles or the golf balls.  The same goes for life.  If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Spend time with your children.  Spend time with your parents.  Visit with grandparents.  Take time to get medical checkups.  Take your spouse out to dinner.  Play another 18.  There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.  Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.  Set your priorities.  The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.  The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.

The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

* I think this started on the internet with "coffee" instead of beer, but I say there is room/time enough in life with to have coffee in the morning with friends, and beers at night with them. :>

Hokies Wakeboard Team

While many clubs and student organizations on campus focus on academics and future job opportunities, there is one that harbors on something fun and aquatic.

Courtesy VT Waterski and Wakeboard ClubBrian Benjamin, a member of the Waterski and WakeboardClub, completes a double back roll at a practice earlier this semester.

The Virginia Tech Waterski and Wakeboard Club, which competed in the Collegiate Wakeboarding Eastern Regional Qualifier last weekend in Pennsylvania, placed third and earning a bid to the Collegiate Wakeboarding Finals in San Diego next spring.

Now the club free rides all through out the fall, which many say is the best part. There are no try-outs as of now, and membership is offered at any time.

"You can join anytime you want to join or you can come out riding for $10 up to two times," said Jeff Goldblum, president of Tech's Waterski and Wakeboard club.

Vic's Heading To The Pound And Not a Day To Soon

Michael Vick is heading to a federal prison early - before he learns how much time he'll have to serve.
Court paperwork filed today shows Vick wants to start his prison sentence early, and has not violated any condition of his bond.
